Drowning is often silent.
Many people expect drowning to look like yelling, splashing, or waving for help. In reality, a person in distress may be unable to call out or attract attention.
Some signs of drowning include:
• Head low in the water with the mouth at water level
• Head tilted back with mouth open
• Glassy, unfocused, or closed eyes
• Hair covering the forehead or eyes
• Gasping or hyperventilating
• A vertical body position with little or no leg movement
• Appearing to climb an invisible ladder
• Trying to swim but not making progress
Recognizing these signs can help save a life.
