Water safety is not just something to think about at the pool, beach, or lake. Drowning risks can also be found in everyday places around the home.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of about 87 children under age 5 drown each year in non-pool, in-home locations, including bathtubs, buckets, and toilets.
Items that may seem harmless, such as bathtubs, toilets, buckets, pet water bowls, coolers, and other containers that can hold water, can become dangerous when young children have unsupervised access to them. Young children may lean, reach, or climb toward water without understanding the risk.
To help make your home safer:
- Stay within arm’s reach of young children near water.
- Empty buckets, tubs, coolers, and other containers immediately after use.
- Keep toilet lids closed and secure bathroom doors when needed.
- Prevent unsupervised access to pools and other water sources.
Small actions can make a big difference.
At Float2Fly, we believe water safety starts with awareness, education, and access. By recognizing risks both inside and outside the home, we can help create safer environments for children and families.
